A Few Facts About Affton, Missouri

Affton is a community of about 20,000 residents in South St. Louis County just outside the city limits of St. Louis.  This suburban neighborhood has a hometown feel with the convenience of having the city lifestyle and business district nearby.  The middle-class residents enjoy affordable housing with an estimated median house or condo value of $153,780 in 2007.

This small farming community incorporated in the early 1900s was unincorporated in 1935 because of a lack of city funds. The area remains without a local government and is under the direct supervision of St. Louis County.  A community group in Affton recognized the need for their own fire department and through local fundraising efforts the current Affton Fire Protection District was established.

Nestled around Affton are many businesses, restaurants and shopping districts.  Affton is within 15 minutes of these retail hot spots:  downtown St. Louis, Clayton, Crestwood Mall, South County Mall and the Gravois Bluffs shopping center.

Affton has a good school system, receiving Missouri’s Distinction in Performance award in 2008.  Affton is always improving its schools.  Recently, the school district renovated the Affton High School athletic fields and added lights to the football field.  Drive by on Friday nights and you’ll see a packed house, full of community support and spirit.

Both residents and tourists enjoy visiting Affton historic landmarks Grant’s Farm and Oakland House, a completely restored mansion built in 1853.
